Pont Calzaghe Bridge

Delivering a knock-out project

As Joint Venture partner of Caerphilly County Borough Council, we were asked to design and project manage the £3.2m Pont Calzaghe Bridge, in Newbridge.

Part of the Newbridge Regeneration Programme, the bridge provides an important link for pedestrians and cyclists, and aims to help bring life back to the town centre. We were delighted to be a part of it.

This whole project has been an excellent example of partnership working.
Idris McCarthy, Chair of Newbridge Partnership

Funded through Welsh Government transport grants, Regional Development Fund funding, Caerphilly County Borough Council, and the Newbridge Community Partnership, the bridge has two connected footway and cycleway bridges. One spans the Ebbw Valley Railway and the other spans the River Ebbw.

  • The Railway Bridge is a single span, half through curved vierendeel truss.
  • The River Ebbw Bridge is a single span cable-stayed steel superstructure. It’s supported by a single raking mask centrally positioned in the walkway and extending above the deck.

Officially opened by the town’s unbeaten world boxing champion Joe Calzaghe, and his award-winning trainer father Enzo, it marked the completion of the Newbridge ‘Safe Routes in Communities’ scheme, of which the new bridge is an integral part.

We’re honoured to have this landmark structure named after us and we hope the whole community will enjoy the benefits of the bridge.
Joe Calzaghe
