Penderyn Square

Breathing new life into Merthyr

In 2008, a review into the regeneration of Merthyr Tydfil town centre identified a number of projects it was felt were needed to establish the town centre as the main hub for the Heads of the Valleys region. That’s where we came in.

We provided design and engineering services on the £25 million River Taff Central Link and Penderyn Square Project – the centerpiece of Merthyr Tydfil’s regeneration programme.

It’s commendable to see a comprehensive urban renewal project effectively delivered in this way.

Our work on the link scheme involved:

  • constructing the College Plaza, linking the Merthyr Learning Quarter with the riverside and town centre
  • greatly improving accessibility into the town centre through a one-way gyratory system
  • constructing the new St Tydfil’s Bridge, incorporating an iconic skew arch structure
  • providing a designated bus lane and remodelled traffic junction at Castle Street.

We also designed the new Penderyn Square outside the renovated Old Town Hall. Helping reinforce the cultural identity of Merthyr Tydfil, Penderyn Square is a multi-function area that hosts markets and live performances. And with traffic slowed to 20mph and paving across the carriageway, it gives far greater priority to pedestrians.

The project won the Special Award for Regeneration at the annual ICE Wales Cymru Awards.
